Connect your own AI to Strama: ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor
Connect ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or Claude Code to Strama over MCP: custom connector setup, what your AI can and can't change, and how its work is labeled.
You can connect your own AI assistant, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, to your Strama account through MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard that lets an AI app work with another app's data. Once it's connected, you can ask it in plain words to read your projects and to add or edit sources, factors and strategies. Strama still calculates every score, and the sources, factors and strategies your AI adds or edits are labeled AI-assisted.
Claude and ChatGPT connect with a sign-in, so there's nothing to install. Cursor and Claude Code use a token you paste once. This guide covers all four, then what your AI can change and what only you can, and how its work shows up in your paper's disclosure.
Before you connect anything, see the kind of matrix your AI will be working in. Try the sample EFE, no account needed.

What you need before you start
- Your Strama account, with at least one project in it.
- The AI app you want to connect. ChatGPT connects only on plans that support custom connectors.
- The Strama server address:
https://strama.tech/api/mcp. It's also on your account's AI page, with a copy button.
There are two ways to connect:
- Sign-in (Claude, ChatGPT). Your AI app opens Strama's sign-in page, you sign in and review what it's asking for, and you allow it. You don't copy anything but the address.
- Token (Cursor, Claude Code). You create a personal access token on your account's AI page, choose its access and when it expires, and paste it into the app once.
Connect Claude with a custom connector
These steps are for Claude on the web (claude.ai) and the Claude desktop app. You sign in with Strama, so there's no token to copy.
- Open Claude and go to Customize → Connectors. (In older versions it's Settings → Connectors.)
- Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
- Name it Strama and paste
https://strama.tech/api/mcpinto Remote MCP server URL. Click Add. - Click Connect next to Strama. Strama's page opens. Check that it says Claude, then click Allow.
- In a new chat, open the tools menu, make sure Strama is on, and ask: “List my Strama projects.”
On the free Claude plan you can add one custom connector. Custom connectors depend on your Claude plan, so if you don't see Add custom connector, check Claude's help for your plan. On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an admin may need to add it first.
Connect ChatGPT with a custom connector
You sign in with Strama, so there's no token to copy. ChatGPT connects only on plans that support custom connectors, and it needs developer mode turned on first.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode. (Older versions call it Apps & Connectors.)
- Go back to Apps and click Create.
- Name it Strama, paste
https://strama.tech/api/mcpinto MCP server URL, and set Authentication to OAuth. Confirm you trust the app, then click Create. - Strama's page opens. Check that it says ChatGPT, then click Allow.
- In a new chat, add Strama from the + menu and ask: “List my Strama projects.”
Developer mode isn't on every ChatGPT plan. If you don't see it, check OpenAI's help for your plan.
Connect Cursor or Claude Code
Cursor and Claude Code use a personal access token instead of a sign-in. If you've never used a code editor or a terminal, connect Claude or ChatGPT instead. You don't need these two.
Create a token
- In Strama, open your account's AI page and create a new token.
- Name it after where you'll use it, for example “Cursor on my laptop”. Choose Read only or Read and write, and choose when it expires. It expires after 90 days unless you pick another option.
- Copy the token now. Strama shows it once and keeps only a scrambled fingerprint of it, so it can't show it again. If you lose it, revoke it and create a new one.
Treat the token like a password. Anyone who has it can act in your projects with the access you chose, so don't paste it into a chat, a shared document or a group message.
Cursor
- In Cursor, open Settings → Cursor Settings → MCP and click Add new MCP server. This opens a file called
mcp.json. - Paste this in, replacing
PASTE_YOUR_TOKEN_HEREwith your token. If the file already lists other servers, add only the"strama"part inside"mcpServers".
{
"mcpServers": {
"strama": {
"url": "https://strama.tech/api/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer PASTE_YOUR_TOKEN_HERE" }
}
}
}- Save the file. In Cursor's MCP settings, Strama should show as connected.
- In Cursor's chat, ask: “List my Strama projects.”
Claude Code
- In a terminal, run this, replacing
PASTE_YOUR_TOKEN_HEREwith your token:
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user strama https://strama.tech/api/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer PASTE_YOUR_TOKEN_HERE"- Start
claudeand type/mcp. Strama should be listed as connected. - Ask: “List my Strama projects.”
What to ask first
Ask in plain words, the way you'd ask a groupmate. For example:
- “List my Strama projects and tell me which matrices are still drafts.”
- “Read my EFE and list the factors that don't cite a source.”
- “Here are three articles about the coffee industry. Add each one as a source, then suggest opportunities and threats from them as factors that cite those sources.”
- “Read my SWOT in the TOWS matrix and draft WO strategies from it. Add the ones I pick as strategies.”
New to these matrices? Start with the EFE matrix and TOWS matrix guides.
Your AI decides which Strama actions to take, and it can misread a request. After it changes anything, open the project in Strama and check what changed.
What your AI can and can't do
Your AI acts as you, so it can reach only the projects you can open, and only with the access you gave it.
With read and write access, it can:
- Read your projects: sources, factors, matrices, strategies, your recommendation, comments and the financial model.
- Make the changes listed under “What your AI can change” in the next section.
It can't:
- Type a total or a score. Strama calculates them from the inputs, with the method named on screen.
- Write the things listed under “What only you can change” in the next section.
- Get past your plan. A feature that needs a paid plan in Strama needs one when your AI uses it too.
- Upload statements for Strama to read, export files, or use Strama's own AI tools.
- Change billing, team members, invites or your account.
- Change anything at all with a read-only token.
- Read or change what's inside a project that has AI switched off.
How your AI's work is labeled
Your AI can write sources, factors and strategies, and Strama labels them AI-assisted, the same as a suggestion from Strama's own AI that you accepted. It can also change the structure around them, which isn't labeled. It can't write your weights, ratings, recommendation, comments or financial figures.
- Sources and factors: add, edit, link a factor to the sources it cites, move to the trash and restore.
- Strategies: add, edit, move to the trash and restore.
- Structure: new projects and project settings, framework links, a factor added to a weighted matrix, an alternative added to a QSPM.
The sources, factors and strategies it adds or edits are labeled AI-assisted in your project and listed in the AI disclosure appendix of your exports. Linking a source and the structure changes above aren't labeled, so check them in Strama. Anything it deletes goes to the trash, where you can restore it for 30 days. Moving your chosen strategy to the trash clears the choice, so you'll pick again.
- Matrix weights, ratings and attractiveness scores, and marking a matrix reviewed.
- Your recommendation.
- Comments.
- Choosing your strategy and the strategies to implement.
- Financial statement figures, and the financial model and its scenarios.
Your AI can't write these, so nothing in them carries an AI label. If you use your AI's feedback when you write them, say so in your own disclosure. It can still read them, so it can give you feedback in its own chat.
Your program's rules come first
Strama doesn't write your paper, and connecting an AI doesn't change who answers for it. You do. Labels make your AI's part visible to you and to anyone reading your exports, but they don't make it allowed.
Before you connect anything, check your program's policy on AI tools. If it limits what AI may do, keep to that limit. A read-only token, for example, lets an AI read your project and give feedback in its own chat without changing anything in Strama.
Your panel will still ask where a number came from and why you weighted a factor the way you did. An AI can help you draft. The answers in your defense have to be yours.
What your AI sees, and who keeps it
When your AI reads your project, that content goes to the company that runs your AI, under your account and your terms with them. Strama's notice on what we send to AI covers Strama's own AI tools, not an assistant you connect. Strama receives the actions your AI asks it to take, not the rest of your conversation.
Disconnect or revoke access
Open your account's AI page. Apps you connected with a sign-in, such as Claude and ChatGPT, are listed with when each was last used, and tokens are listed by name. Revoke one and that app loses access to your account. Removing Strama in Claude's or ChatGPT's settings stops it on their side as well.
Questions about connecting your AI
Does connecting an AI cost extra?
Not in Strama. Connecting is included on every plan, including Free. Your AI app's plan is separate, and ChatGPT connects only on plans that support custom connectors.
Which AI should I use?
Strama doesn't rank them. Use one your program allows and you already know. Scores are calculated and AI work is labeled the same way whichever you connect.
Will my AI get it right?
Not always. It can misread your project or your request, or write a factor your sources don't support. Check every change in Strama before it goes into your paper, the way you'd check a groupmate's work.
Can my groupmates connect their own AI to our project?
Yes. Each person connects from their own account, and their AI can do only what that person can do in the project.
Does it work with other AI apps?
Apps that support remote MCP servers with a sign-in or a token may work. This guide has steps for four of them, and we can't promise how any other app behaves.
What if my project has AI switched off?
Your connected AI can't read or change what's inside it, though it can still see that the project exists. AI off means no AI works in the project, Strama's or yours. Switch AI back on in the project's settings if you want to connect one.
Is Strama affiliated with Anthropic, OpenAI or Cursor?
No. Strama is independent of Anthropic, OpenAI and Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, and none of them sponsors it. Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor are their owners' trademarks, named here only so you can find the right steps. Strama's own AI tools use Anthropic as a processor, as the notice on what we send to AI explains, and that is separate from any assistant you connect.
