Sample TOWS matrix · Tala Provisions, Inc.

SWOT lists the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. TOWS pairs them into strategies. Tala Provisions has three: one SO, one WO and one ST, each tied to the factors behind it and a reason. Add a fourth, perhaps a WT strategy, and link the factors it rests on. How it works

Is using this cheating?
In your own project, you choose every factor, weight, rating and strategy. Strama does the arithmetic and shows how each total was reached. Check your program's policy on tools.
My professor gave us a template.
Strama uses the standard textbook methods, and each matrix names its method on screen. On a paid plan, you can export to Word, PowerPoint and Excel to fit your template.
Where do my edits go?
They stay in this browser. Getting early access sends your email, one optional answer about where you are, how you found us and whether you tried a sample, never your edits.
Will I have to retype it?
No. Your edits are kept in this browser, and they come with you when you save, once you have an account.

How the TOWS matrix works

TOWS has no score. Each strategy has to pass a structure check.

  1. SWOT: tick the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to include. They come from the same factors as the EFE and IFE.
  2. Pick a type for each strategy. SO uses strengths to seize opportunities. WO fixes weaknesses by taking opportunities. ST uses strengths to blunt threats. WT reduces weaknesses and avoids threats.
  3. Link at least two factors: at least one internal and one external, from the right sides for the type. An SO strategy cannot rest on a weakness.
  4. Write the rationale: which factors make it work, and how.

How to build the TOWS matrix

Worked example: Tala Provisions

ST-01 (SO) adds office plans and café pickup to the online subscription. It rests on fresh roasting and loyal subscribers (F-008, F-009) meeting specialty demand and online ordering (F-001, F-003).

3 strategiesSO 1 · WO 1 · ST 1 · WT 0

ST-02 (WO) opens two mall cafés outside Metro Manila to fix Tala's small footprint and low awareness (F-011, F-012), using the return to malls and specialty demand (F-005, F-001).

ST-03 (ST) signs longer direct-trade contracts so Tala relies less on imported beans, using its farm relationships and roasting know-how (F-007, F-008) against import duty and the weaker peso (F-002, F-004).

All three are specific enough to score. That matters, because the QSPM compares strategies, not slogans.

Notice what is missing: a WT strategy. Thin wholesale margins (F-013) and a weaker peso (F-004) are a pair worth a defensive move, such as repricing wholesale contracts. Write it, link the two factors, and give your reason. The check tells you at once if the links don't fit the type.

Where it fits

TOWS draws its S and W from the IFE and its O and T from the EFE. The other matching tools, SPACE, BCG, IE and Grand Strategy, tell you which kinds of strategy suit the company. The strategies you write here are the ones the QSPM scores.

Common mistakes

  • Strategies that are goals. "Become the top coffee brand" is a goal. "Open two mall cafés outside Metro Manila" is a strategy.
  • Pairing the wrong sides. A WO strategy needs a weakness and an opportunity; a strength in its links is an error.
  • No rationale, or a rationale that repeats the strategy. Say how the linked factors make it work.

FAQs

What is the difference between SWOT and TOWS?

SWOT lists the four groups. TOWS matches them into strategies, one quadrant for each pairing.

Do I need a strategy in every quadrant?

No rule requires it, and many capstones have one or two per quadrant. Each strategy needs its links and a reason.

Can one factor support several strategies?

Yes. Tala's fresh roasting (F-008) supports both ST-01 and ST-03.
